A scrappy Midwesterner is gaining attention in his quest to pick off an incumbent Republican and become the second Democratic Nebraskan elected to the U.S. House since the turn of the century.

With political insiders focused intently on biggies like New York and California in the battle for control of the House in 2024, Tony Vargas, a Nebraska state senator, is drawing awareness to the middle of the country. He's determined to win his rematch against Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., who Vargas calls a wolf in sheep's clothing.

“He’s been voting with the most extreme right wing of his party,” Vargas told The Messenger during an interview in a downtown Omaha coffee shop, as he tied Bacon to the fringes of his party in Washington.
